How It Started

Women - Outdoors, Active and Happy, Gathering In Real Life

Maintaining friendships and staying socially active is essential for the well-being of women as they age. Social connections play a crucial role in enhancing mental health, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation, and providing emotional support. Engaging in social activities helps us stay mentally sharp, encourages a sense of belonging, and promotes a positive outlook on life. Regular social interaction has been linked to lower risks of depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline. It's so important for us to nurture those relationships and participate in activities and groups that bring joy and companionship. By staying socially active, we can enjoy a richer, more fulfilling life, and maintain our mental and emotional health.

Starting fresh in a new city can be challenging, especially when it comes to finding like-minded women who share your passion for outdoor activities. That's why three years after arriving in San Diego, a woman decided to take matters into her own hands. While there was a plethora of online groups for outdoor activities, she couldn’t find one focused on women nearing retirement years. After posing the question in a general San Diego women’s hiking group, she realized there were others, like her, looking for their people.

Recognizing the need, she launched an outdoor activities group designed to bring together enthusiasts of hiking, bicycling, paddleboarding, and more. The group’s focus would be to foster a community where newcomers and locals alike can explore San Diego's stunning landscapes, build lasting friendships, and create unforgettable experiences. In this process, they would also be working on that critical need to stay socially active.

In the process, she realized that married or committed women also shared a desire to find like-minded individuals as their spouse or partner have different interests or physical limitations. Others may have gone through a recent divorce or loss of a spouse or partner. For some, children that are now adults leading their own busy lives.

Then there are those women looking to expand their circle of friends or willing to mentor less experienced.

In addition to the need for friends and engaging socially, staying active is crucial for women to maintain their physical well-being. Regular physical activity helps to preserve strength, flexibility, and balance, which are essential for daily living. Moreover, staying active can prevent or delay the onset of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, dementia and arthritis. On the mental front, physical activity promotes better cognitive function, reduces the risk of depression and anxiety, and enhances overall mood and quality of life.

By combining all these women into one community focused on staying both socially and physically active, having fun, sharing laughs and making friends,  Woah Girl was born.
