Joni Coci

Hi! I’m the desperate woman seeking friends as mentioned in “How it Started”.

In 2017, I relocated from Northwest Ohio to Southern California to be closer to my adult sons. Initially settling in the Riverside/Temecula area, I later moved to San Diego in the fall of 2020. Being single, friendless, and in the midst of a pandemic, it was a rather lonely time!

Over the years, my outdoor activities have been quite varied. As a youth and during my time in the U.S. Marine Corps, I ran, played softball and basketball, and participated in both short and long-distance cycling events. Occasionally, I've also enjoyed kayaking and hiking, although not consistently. Photography has always been a passion, especially capturing unique sunrises and sunsets.

When I hit my mid-life crisis (turning 50 and my sons heading off to college), I decided to pivot and bought a motorcycle, which became my new passion until I moved to SoCal. Although I brought my bike along, I struggled to find my community here, and riding in Southern California felt very different from the Midwest.

By February 2024, I was determined to find my people. Despite joining various Facebook and Meetup social groups, I couldn't find the right fit. Inspired by a post in another online hiking group, I decided to take a chance and create a new group. I would rather risk no one joining my Facebook group and failing than endure one more solo outdoor adventure.

Thankfully, it didn’t fail (phew), and with the addition of Annette and Joan to the Facebook Group Admin team, our Woah Girl community is growing and thriving.

We also have some incredible women leading events each week, who play a significant role in our community's growth. My hope is that they feel a sense of accomplishment and pride in knowing what they’re doing is making such a huge impact!

I love attending events, whether I’m hosting or participating, and meeting new women, joking around, and having fun. I enjoy both easy and moderate hikes but aim to increase my endurance for more challenging trails.

I look forward to meeting you on a trail or the water soon!

Joannie Chan

Hello everyone! I'm Joannie, also known as Joan and now, ‘Joannie with all the vowels'.  Originally from Malaysia, I discovered the thrill of hiking several years after I moved to California.  My journey into hiking began in 2020, and ever since, I've fallen head over heels for exploring trails that lead to breathtaking views. I'm more of a leisure hiker than a mountain peak conqueror, preferring to soak in the tranquility of the outdoors.

Beyond hiking, I have a passion for capturing the beauty of nature through photography, creating memories and ensuring each adventure is captured in stunning visuals. Outside of nature, I enjoy dancing, traveling, indulging in good food and wine, diving into a good book, horror movies, trying new experiences and expanding my circle of friends.

I am excited to continue exploring scenic trails, embarking on new adventures together, sharing unforgettable experiences and building great friendships with you - Woah Girl!
